01
In brief German chamomile (*Matricaria chamomilla/recutita*) is used as a food herb, tea and concentrated extract. These forms are not interchangeable. Evidence for sleep, digestion and allergies is limited or mixed.
02
Forms matter A flower infusion gives a different exposure from a tincture or standardised extract. Evidence for one product cannot be transferred automatically to another.
03
Sleep and digestion Chamomile is associated with bedtime relaxation, but clinical evidence for insomnia is very limited. Traditional use includes mild digestive discomfort, not unexplained pain or diagnosed disease. Persistent symptoms need assessment.
04
Allergy and interactions Chamomile belongs to the Asteraceae family. People allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies may react. Warfarin and some liver-metabolised medicines have reported interaction concerns; sedative effects are theoretically possible. Tell a pharmacist about regular use.
05
Pregnancy and extracts Because safety data are insufficient, medicinal extracts and tinctures are discouraged during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised by a professional. Do not replace treatment with tea or supplements.
06
Verdict Chamomile can be a reasonable culinary herb or occasional tea. It is not a proven treatment for insomnia, digestive disease or allergies. [Ginger forms and precautions](/en/article/gingembre-nausees-formes-precautions-donnees) offer a useful comparison of food, infusion and extract.
