Peppermint: digestion, evidence and safety precautions
01

At a glance

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is available as leaf, tea and essential oil. These preparations are not interchangeable and should not be treated as equivalent.

02

1. Three different preparations

Peppermint leaf and tea mainly have a traditional use for some digestive complaints. Clinical trials remain insufficient for firm conclusions. [1]

Essential oil is much more concentrated. Studies mainly concern enteric-coated capsules designed to release the oil further down the digestive tract. They do not validate swallowing pure drops or using a different commercial product.

03

2. What studies show

A 2022 meta-analysis found a benefit over placebo for some symptoms and abdominal pain in adults with irritable bowel syndrome. Results varied, several trials had risk of bias, and overall certainty was very low. [2]

04

3. Reflux and precautions

Reflux, heartburn, nausea and abdominal pain are possible adverse effects. People with reflux, biliary disease or digestive obstruction, children, and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding should seek professional advice before use.

05

4. Reading a label

Check the plant part, dosage form, concentration, release system and warnings. A leaf tea cannot establish the effectiveness or safety of an essential-oil capsule.

06

5. When to seek care

Persistent pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss or severe reflux require medical advice. Peppermint does not replace diagnosis or prescribed treatment.
