Nettle leaves or root: what does the evidence say?

Nettle is not one single herbal medicine: aerial parts and root have different monographs and uses. European indications describe traditional use, not a guarantee for every product.

01

1. Leaves and root differ

EMA distinguishes nettle herb from root. Aerial parts cover specific traditional uses for minor urinary complaints and joint pain; root concerns urinary symptoms linked to benign prostatic hyperplasia after serious causes are excluded by a doctor.

02

2. What do trials show?

A recent review pooled six randomized trials involving 1,210 participants. A favorable signal had very low certainty because of bias, heterogeneity and imprecision. One 620-person trial was favorable; a 49-person nettle-Pygeum trial did not differ significantly from placebo.

03

3. Choosing a form

Check whether the label says aerial parts or root, then identify the preparation. Root-extract evidence cannot automatically be transferred to leaf tea. Avoid universal detox claims.

04

4. Precautions

05FAQ

01Are leaves and root the same? No. Monographs, preparations and uses differ.
02Can leaf tea act on the prostate? Root evidence does not establish the same effect for leaf tea.
