In brief

Glutamine is an amino acid involved in metabolism, the intestinal lining and immune cells. This makes supplementation appealing after demanding exercise. A plausible biological function, however, does not prove that a supplement improves recovery, prevents infections or increases performance.

1. Why are athletes interested in glutamine?

Glutamine acts as a substrate and nitrogen transporter. Enterocytes and some immune cells use it, providing a plausible mechanism for supporting the intestinal barrier and immune response. After very prolonged exercise, plasma glutamine may temporarily decrease. This observation does not prove that the decrease causes weaker immunity or more infections.

2. Gut: a targeted signal, not a comfort promise

In a crossover trial, ten physically active men ran for 60 minutes at 70% of VO2max in a 30 °C chamber. Glutamine taken before exercise reduced one marker of intestinal permeability compared with placebo. Digestive symptoms were uncommon and were not reduced.

A 2024 meta-analysis including ten trials and 352 adults with varied health profiles found no significant overall effect on intestinal permeability. Some subgroups suggested a signal with high, short-term intakes, but those analyses cannot establish a sports dose because populations, protocols and measurements differed.

3. Recovery: separate soreness, markers and performance

Glutamine is often associated with muscle repair, less soreness or glycogen replenishment. Mechanistic arguments and isolated trials may look favourable, but results are heterogeneous. The 2018 meta-analysis found no significant effect on aerobic performance or body composition; its conclusions about anaerobic performance and muscle soreness were insufficient.

Before considering a supplement, the more robust levers remain adequate energy intake, carbohydrates matched to training load, dietary protein, hydration, sleep and progressive training.

4. Immunity: an attractive hypothesis, limited evidence

Immune cells use glutamine, but this does not mean that adding it protects athletes. A critical review notes that there is no direct causal evidence linking a post-exercise fall in plasma glutamine to reduced immunity and more infections in athletes. The 2018 meta-analysis found no significant effect on white-cell, lymphocyte or neutrophil counts.

A three-week trial in 21 boxers and taekwondo practitioners observed changes in salivary markers and reported respiratory infections. This is an interesting signal, but the sample was small, the population specific and the duration short. It is not enough to promise prevention of colds or general immune protection.

5. Should it be taken around training?

There is no established universal sports protocol. Studies used different forms, doses, durations and timings; some also combined other nutrients. A dose studied in one trial is therefore not a transferable prescription. The ideal timing—before or after exercise—remains uncertain.

For a healthy athlete who still wants to try it, the most cautious approach is to change only one variable at a time, avoid testing it before a competition and stop if digestive symptoms occur. This experiment does not replace medical advice or turn limited evidence into an expected benefit.

01Does glutamine improve performance?

Not in a demonstrated, general way. The available synthesis does not show a clear benefit for aerobic performance, and evidence for other efforts remains limited.

02Is it useful for the gut during running?

A small study in heat improved one permeability marker, without an effect on already uncommon symptoms. This is a research lead, not a guarantee of digestive comfort.

03Does it prevent respiratory infections?

The evidence is insufficient to say so. A trial in combat-sport athletes is interesting but too small and specific for a general recommendation.

04What dose should be chosen?

These findings do not establish a universal sports dose. Avoid turning a research protocol into personalised advice.
