Beetroot juice interests endurance athletes because it provides dietary nitrates. These compounds may change some exercise markers, but they do not guarantee a faster time or the same benefit for everyone. The key is to distinguish a plausible mechanism, a laboratory result and an improvement that is useful in competition.
What nitrates may change After ingestion, some nitrate follows a pathway through nitrite and nitric oxide. This pathway contributes to vascular regulation and may change oxygen cost during some efforts. It explains why beetroot juice is studied, but does not show that it automatically raises VO2max or performance.
Which athletes may respond? Studies include recreationally active adults, trained athletes and some elite athletes, using different tests. The signal appears more consistent in recreationally active adults than in highly trained endurance athletes, but this comparison depends on protocols and sample sizes. An individual response is possible but not predictable.
Dose and timing: reference points, not a prescription Acute protocols often use a dose about 2 to 3 hours before exercise. Trials and reviews have studied about 5 to 9 mmol of nitrate, roughly 310 to 560 mg, but doses, products and populations are not interchangeable. Powder weight or juice volume does not reveal the active amount; check the declared nitrate content when available.
Marketing versus data Saying that beetroot juice “oxygenates muscles” or “increases power” without naming the test and population oversimplifies the evidence. The data are more nuanced: some outcomes improve, others do not, and average effects are usually modest. A time-to-exhaustion test does not directly predict a faster race time.
How to try it without fooling yourself If you want to test it, choose a comparable, non-critical session, record the product and its declared content, and keep the meal, caffeine, warm-up and intensity consistent. Compare several sessions with and without it rather than relying on one sensation. If no reproducible difference appears, increasing the dose is not a logical conclusion.
06FAQ ### Does beetroot juice raise VO2max? The evidence does not support a general claim. Some reviews find small aerobic effects in active adults, while other results show no clear VO2max improvement.
01Should I drink it just before running? No. Acute protocols often study a dose 2 to 3 hours before exercise. This is a research reference window, not an exact time for everyone.
