Rhodiola rosea and sport: performance, studied doses and limits

Rhodiola rosea is often marketed as an adaptogen. Human trials tell a narrower story: effects are modest and vary with the task, dose and extract.

1. What trials actually measure Studies assess time to exhaustion, time trials, VO₂max, power or perceived exertion. These outcomes are not interchangeable; a laboratory result does not guarantee a faster race.

2. A possible, task-specific effect In a small crossover trial, 3 mg/kg one hour before exercise was associated with a faster cycling time trial and lower perceived exertion. Other trials found no clear benefit in running, rowing or endurance tests.

3. Doses and extracts are not interchangeable Studies tested acute amounts around 200 mg or 3 mg/kg, as well as higher daily intakes for days or weeks. Rosavin and salidroside concentrations vary between products. These figures describe research protocols, not an individual prescription.

4. Limits of recovery biomarkers A change in creatine kinase does not by itself demonstrate functional recovery or better performance. The 2023 review noted heterogeneity and often unclear or high risk of bias.

05FAQ ### Does rhodiola replace caffeine? No. The evidence does not support treating them as equivalent.

01Should it be taken every day? No universal daily strategy has been established.
