Collagen and Tendons: What Studies Show in Sport

Collagen and gelatin are sometimes suggested before tendon-loading sessions. A small human study found a biological signal, but it did not show fewer injuries or better performance. The practical question is narrower: can an adjunct accompany progressive loading without replacing food or rehabilitation?

01

What the best-known study measured In a crossover trial of eight healthy men, 15 g of vitamin-C-enriched gelatin was taken one hour before intermittent activity. The protocol increased a collagen-synthesis marker. Ligament samples studied in the laboratory also showed mechanical changes after exposure to participant serum.

02

What broader reviews add Longer trials of collagen peptides combined with exercise show heterogeneous findings for strength, musculotendinous structure, recovery and body composition. Protocols, products and outcomes differ. A mechanistic study cannot become a universal recipe.

03

Where an adjunct might fit For a painful tendon or ligament, assessment and suitable loading progression come first. Energy availability, total protein intake and rehabilitation matter before a supplement. Gelatin or collagen peptides can be discussed as a secondary experiment, especially when an injury has been diagnosed.

04

If you want to test it honestly Keep training and diet otherwise stable. For several weeks, record pain, digestive tolerance and ability to complete prescribed exercises. Do not infer injury prevention from one good session. Stop if an adverse effect appears and do not delay assessment.

05FAQ

01Is gelatin better than collagen? Studies use different products and protocols. Current evidence cannot declare one form superior for every athlete.
02Should you take vitamin C? The best-known study used vitamin-C-enriched gelatin, but it cannot establish a universal combination or dose.
03Is it useful for gaining muscle? This is not established by that study. Collagen is not a complete protein equivalent to a dietary strategy for muscle needs.
