Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is often described as a calming herb. European authorities mainly recognise traditional use for mild symptoms of mental stress and to aid sleep. That is not the same as strong evidence for insomnia, and the plant requires a few precautions.
1. Which passionflower? This article concerns *Passiflora incarnata*, whose dried aerial parts or extracts are used in some preparations. It should not be confused with *Passiflora edulis*, the fruit-bearing passionflower.
2. What do the sleep data show? The EMA recognises traditional use to aid sleep and relieve mild mental stress. This conclusion rests on longstanding plausible use, not on clinical trials strong enough to establish certain efficacy.
3. Tea, powder or extract A tea uses dried plant material steeped in water. Powder and extracts are different forms, and composition depends on processing and product. Results from an extract study should not automatically be applied to tea.
4. Drowsiness and interactions Passionflower can cause drowsiness, dizziness or confusion. Do not drive or operate machinery if your alertness is reduced.
5. A cautious decision Define the problem first: difficulty falling asleep, awakenings, evening stress or persistent symptoms. If sleep is disturbed for more than two weeks, worsens or comes with other symptoms, look for the cause rather than adding more herbs.
06FAQ
01Does passionflower make you sleep? The evidence cannot establish that for everyone. Small studies suggest a possible effect on some sleep measures, while other findings are mixed.
02Can it be taken every night? Duration and form depend on the product. Follow its leaflet and seek advice if symptoms last more than two weeks, worsen or medicines are involved.
03What about pregnancy? The NCCIH advises against it during pregnancy. Safety data in breastfeeding are insufficient; consult a health professional.
04Can it be combined with a sleeping pill? Do not combine them without medical advice: drowsiness and nervous-system slowing may add up.
