Calcium supplements: forms, diet, risks and interactions

Calcium is essential, but a supplement is not an automatic choice. Start by estimating food intake, then check whether a medical situation justifies supplementation.

01

1. What is calcium for? Calcium supports bones and teeth and helps muscles and nerves function. Adult total-intake references are often around 1,000 mg daily, sometimes 1,200 mg depending on age and sex; this is not a supplement dose.

02

2. Start with food Sources include dairy products, calcium-fortified plant drinks, leafy greens, calcium-set tofu and fish eaten with their bones, such as sardines. Read food and supplement labels together.

03

3. Carbonate and citrate Carbonate contains more elemental calcium per gram of salt than citrate, but tolerance and context also matter. Compare elemental calcium on the label, not the total compound weight. Neither form is universally superior.

FormWhat to checkCaution
CarbonateHigher elemental-calcium shareDigestive tolerance
CitrateLower elemental-calcium shareStill has drug interactions

4. Risks and when to ask for advice High doses may cause digestive symptoms and are not automatically more protective for bones. Ask a clinician before use if you have kidney disease, kidney stones, hypercalcemia, pregnancy or daily medication. Dietary calcium and supplemental calcium are not interchangeable in kidney-stone history.

05

5. Interactions A small pharmacokinetic study in eight healthy adults found about 20–25% lower levothyroxine absorption when co-administered with three calcium formulations. Ask a pharmacist or doctor about the appropriate separation. The same applies to some antibiotics.

06FAQ ### Is dietary calcium always enough? Not always. Restrictive diets, malabsorption or a medical indication may require assessment.

01Is citrate better than carbonate? Not for everyone. The label, tolerance, medication and medical context matter more than a general ranking.
02Can calcium be taken with levothyroxine? Co-administration may reduce absorption. Ask for a precise schedule.
