Magnesium: citrate, bisglycinate or oxide — which form should you choose?

In brief

Citrate, bisglycinate and oxide are not interchangeable. Compare elemental magnesium per serving first, then digestive tolerance, absorption evidence, the real goal and medical context. Citrate is often better documented than oxide for absorption; bisglycinate may suit some people, but evidence does not make it universally superior.

1. Compare the right quantity

Labels may show the weight of the salt or chelate. The useful comparison is elemental magnesium. Add food, multivitamins and other minerals together. Reference intakes describe population needs, not a prescription. Leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains remain a useful foundation. [1][2][4]

Absorption, plasma magnesium, symptoms and tolerance are not the same outcome. A better absorption marker does not prove a better clinical effect.

3. Sleep, stress and cramps

A recent bisglycinate trial found a modest improvement in an insomnia score after four weeks. That is a limited signal, not proof that it treats insomnia. NCCIH considers the overall evidence on magnesium and sleep insufficiently robust. [6]

For cramps, Cochrane evidence does not support presenting magnesium as a reliable solution for everyone. Persistent fatigue, insomnia or cramps need assessment rather than automatic dose escalation. [5]

4. Digestive tolerance and dose

Magnesium supplements can cause diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal cramps. A “gentle” form does not guarantee tolerance. Read elemental magnesium, avoid stacking products and stop if symptoms are significant. For adults, NIH sets an upper limit of 350 mg/day from supplements and medicines; it does not include food magnesium. This is not a personal target. [3][10]

5. Kidneys, pregnancy and interactions

With kidney impairment, elimination may be reduced and toxicity risk rises. Seek advice during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with chronic disease or regular treatment. Magnesium can reduce absorption of some antibiotics and bisphosphonates; timing should be checked with a pharmacist. Interactions are also possible with diuretics and proton-pump inhibitors. Never alter treatment to start a supplement. [3][10]

Verdict

Start with elemental magnesium and the actual goal. Citrate has favourable comparisons with oxide in some studies; bisglycinate may suit some people without being automatically superior; oxide may be economical but less favourable for absorption. Tolerance, kidneys, interactions and total intake should guide the choice.

01Is bisglycinate necessarily better than citrate? No. Evidence does not rank one form as best in every situation.
02Can I take it every night? It depends on elemental dose, other sources, medicines and kidney function. Ask if use becomes regular.
03Does magnesium help sleep? One bisglycinate trial shows a modest signal, but overall evidence remains limited; it is not an established insomnia treatment.
04Do I need a blood test? Not routinely. Status is complex and symptoms are non-specific; a professional can decide what is relevant.
