Potassium supports nerves, muscles and the heart, but a supplement is not a harmless way to increase intake. This guide explains why food usually comes first, when supplementation may be prescribed, and who needs medical supervision.

1. What potassium does Potassium is an electrolyte found mainly inside cells. It supports nerve transmission, muscle contraction, heart rhythm and fluid balance. The kidneys regulate its elimination. Low dietary intake alone rarely explains deficiency; digestive losses, diuretics and illness can contribute.

2. Reference intakes EFSA proposes 3,500 mg daily for adults and pregnancy and 4,000 mg during lactation. These are food-based references for healthy people, not supplement doses. Legumes, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, dairy and fish provide potassium with other nutrients.

3. Supplement or medicine Many over-the-counter products provide no more than 99 mg per serving. Prescribed products may be much stronger and use mEq; 1 mEq is about 39.1 mg. Do not choose or combine potassium salts, electrolyte drinks or low-sodium salt without professional advice.

4. When it may be prescribed A clinician may prescribe it for measured hypokalemia or digestive or urinary losses. The cause and magnesium status also need assessment. Cramps and tiredness do not prove deficiency. Seek urgent help for severe palpitations, chest pain, breathlessness, sudden weakness or fainting.

5. Medicines and salt substitutes ACE inhibitors, ARBs, aliskiren, potassium-sparing diuretics and some beta blockers can increase hyperkalemia risk. NSAIDs may also affect kidney regulation. Low-sodium salts often contain potassium chloride and may provide 440–2,800 mg per teaspoon depending on the product.

6. Side effects Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas and abdominal pain can occur. Excess potassium can cause weakness, tingling and dangerous heart-rhythm changes. Check elemental potassium, all daily sources and medicines. For many people, improving the diet is more appropriate than isolated potassium.
