In brief

The term omega-3 covers several fatty acids. Chia, flax and walnuts mainly provide alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), while fish provide EPA and DHA directly. These sources can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable. [1]

ALA is essential: the body must obtain it from food. It can convert some ALA into EPA and then DHA, but this conversion remains limited. [1]

2. Chia, flax and walnuts

Chia and flax combine ALA, fibre and unsaturated fats. Flax also stands out for its lignans, while chia readily forms a gel when hydrated. Walnuts provide ALA, but the amount depends on the portion. [1]

These features help with food choices; they do not create a health ranking. Clinical evidence for chia is less certain than its nutritional composition: a systematic review concluded that better trials are needed. [3]

3. What studies allow us to say

Trials and meta-analyses have examined chia in relation to blood glucose, blood pressure and weight indicators. Results vary and do not support presenting chia or flax as a treatment. [3][4][5]

4. Choosing foods day to day

  • For a plant source of ALA: alternate walnuts, chia and flax according to taste.
  • To obtain EPA and DHA directly: oily fish are a classic food source; microalgae may also provide them, depending on the product. [1]
  • For fibre and texture: chia hydrates, while flax is often used ground.
  • For a fair comparison: read the portion, preparation and whole meal.

5. Precautions

A rapid increase in high-fibre foods can cause gas or discomfort in some people. Drink enough and increase gradually according to tolerance. NCCIH notes precautions with flax when medicines are involved, as well as limited data during pregnancy and breastfeeding. [2]

Verdict

Fish, walnuts, chia and flax can all have a place in a varied diet. Fish provide EPA and DHA directly; walnuts, chia and flax mainly provide ALA. None of these foods is a remedy.

01Do walnuts replace fish?

They provide ALA, whereas fish provide EPA and DHA directly. The two sources therefore do not provide the same omega-3 form. [1]

02Does chia reduce weight or blood glucose?

Studies have examined these questions, but the evidence does not support presenting chia as a treatment or as an independent cause of weight loss. [3][4][5]
