In brief

Citrulline is studied in sports nutrition because of its possible role in the arginine–nitric oxide pathway. L-citrulline and citrulline malate are different products, and commercial ratios do not always guarantee the same citrulline content. [1][4]

1. L-citrulline and malate: two forms

L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid. Citrulline malate combines citrulline with malic acid. A product labelled “2:1” does not necessarily provide the same citrulline amount as another product with the same name. [1][4]

Citrulline may raise plasma citrulline and arginine and some nitrate/nitrite markers. The mechanism is plausible, but a biomarker change does not prove a performance gain. [1][4]

2. Circulation: a hypothesis, not a treatment

The nitric-oxide pathway supports a vascular hypothesis. However, human evidence for acute improvements in vasodilation or muscle perfusion remains scarce and inconsistent. Citrulline is not a treatment for hypertension, cardiovascular disease or diagnosed poor circulation. [4]

3. Strength and power

Some meta-analyses report a small favourable signal for high-intensity strength or power tasks. Studies are few, tests differ and participants are often trained. [5][6]

One trial using citrulline malate found no improvement in German Volume Training performance or soreness. [11]

4. Endurance and recovery

Endurance findings vary with the test and protocol. One meta-analysis found no significant pooled benefit across several aerobic outcomes, while other reviews describe possible signals in selected protocols. [8][9]

Soreness, lactate and perceived exertion have been studied without establishing a universal recovery benefit. Citrulline does not replace food, sleep or training. [7][10]

5. Tolerance, medicines and special situations

Short trials generally describe acceptable tolerance, but that does not prove no risk for every person, dose, product or duration. Digestive symptoms may occur. [1][4]

Low blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, vasodilator or antihypertensive treatment warrant professional advice before supplementation. Extra caution is also appropriate with kidney disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, minority or regular medication. [2][3]

6. Reading a product and its marketing

Check the exact form, stated actual citrulline amount, malate ratio, serving and traceability. In competition, independent quality testing may reduce contamination risk but cannot remove it. A plausible mechanism or studied dose is not a performance guarantee. [2][3]

Verdict

Citrulline remains a studied option, not a promise of better circulation, strength or recovery. L-citrulline and malate should be distinguished. Strength and power signals are small and variable; endurance and recovery findings remain uncertain. Tolerance, blood pressure, vasodilator medicines, kidneys, pregnancy and product quality all matter, without an individual protocol.
