Sodium bicarbonate is not a general energy boost. Its possible value depends on the exercise task, the protocol and digestive tolerance. Research is more favorable for some intense, repeated efforts than for steady endurance work.
01
1. What bicarbonate may change Sodium bicarbonate provides extracellular alkaline reserve. Ingestion usually raises blood bicarbonate and pH, which may support hydrogen-ion exchange during very intense exercise. A better blood marker does not guarantee a faster race.
02
2. Effect depends on the effort
03
3. Studied protocol, not a universal recipe Trials often use about 0.3 g/kg 60 to 180 minutes before exercise, but this describes research protocols and is not an individual prescription. Split and multi-day protocols have also been tested; they are not interchangeable.
04
4. Digestive tolerance is part of the result Nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea can make bicarbonate unusable on competition day. Recent analyses find symptoms more often than with placebo, and they can change the estimated benefit. A higher dose is not automatically better.
05
5. Marketing versus data
06FAQ
01Is bicarbonate useful for a long steady session? Recent continuous-running evidence does not show a clear benefit after accounting for publication bias and digestive withdrawals. Do not extrapolate from intense repeated efforts.
02Should it be tested before competition? Yes. If considered, test it in training during a comparable task and observe tolerance.
03Is it the same as sodium in sports drinks? No. Bicarbonate is a sodium salt used here for extracellular buffering; an electrolyte drink mainly addresses fluid and sweat-related electrolyte needs.
