In brief

Beta-alanine is a precursor to muscle carnosine. It is mainly studied for intense efforts in which muscle acidification contributes to fatigue. Results vary with the test, effort duration and population.

1. From beta-alanine to carnosine

Beta-alanine combines with histidine to support carnosine synthesis in muscle. Carnosine contributes to intracellular buffering during intense efforts. This explains the research interest, but a plausible mechanism does not guarantee a gain in every sport. [1][2]

2. Which efforts are relevant?

Benefits are mainly studied in intense efforts lasting about 1–4 minutes; newer work has also examined 4–10-minute efforts, without turning that range into a guarantee for every sport. [1][4][5][6]

Trials include intermittent efforts, capacity tests and disciplines in which intensity lasts long enough for buffering to matter. Evidence is less convincing for isolated maximal strength or long continuous endurance. [1][4][5]

Paraesthesia is tingling or prickling, often after a large beta-alanine dose. In studies it is generally transient and depends on the single dose. [1][8]

Tingling is a frequent sensory side effect in studies; it does not measure effectiveness by itself and should not be interpreted as automatically harmless in every context. Divided doses, smaller servings or some sustained-release forms can reduce it. [1][8]

Supplement composition and quality vary. Check the ingredient name, amount per serving, any sustained-release form and product traceability. In competition, independent quality testing may reduce contamination risk, but cannot remove it.
